Julie Haynes with Jake and Gracie
Country Bark Rangers
Langdon Hills Country Park, Essex
Written by Julie Haynes
The Bark Ranger initiative was thought up by Ginette Sewell and helped along by Julie Haynes, both of whom own Rottweilers. Both Ginette and Julie walk their Rotties throughout Langdon Hills Country Park each day as part of their daily exercise routine. Ginette owns Guardami Calamity Jane (Layla) and Julie owns West End Wilmott (Jake) and Guardami Funny Girl (Gracie).
Ginette has worked as a Park Ranger (now a volunteer) and Julie is a volunteer Park Ranger. During their walks they can come across numerous incidents in the Park, such as weather damage, vandalism, illegal camping and anti-social behaviour. These incidents are then reported back to the Head Warden for action, if they can not be dealt with at the time.
Since starting the Bark Rangers, many dog owners have requested to be part of the service and as a result, we have dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages, which means a large number of people walking throughout the day helping to with the smooth running and safe keeping of Langdon Hills Country Park, ensuring visitors observe and act within the by-laws in order to keep the Park clean, safe and a pleasurable experience for all who visit.
All the dogs have their own ID cards, which are worn by the owner/handler during their walk to help identify them as Bark Rangers and as a contact point, if/when someone requires advice, assistance or wishes to report anything of concern within the Park. On several occasions the Bark Ranger network has helped reunite lost dogs with their owners, which is always a rewarding experience.
With regards to anti-social behaviour and illegal camping, the presence of a Rottweiler has been enough to get the attention and co-operation of the individuals in question and a peaceful end to the disruption being caused. The dogs have never been used in a negative or aggressive manner or been encouraged to approach anyone, which could cause harm to dog or human. The dogs stay within the control of the owner/handler to ensure safety at all times.
We now work alongside the local Police, their dogs, the Mounted Police and in conjunction with Thurrock Council Ranger Service. We are available all year long, come rain, shine or more recently snow and get the exercise we need at the same time.
Being a Rottweiler owner is not always easy due to the bad publicity emanating from bad ownership and/or handling. However, since walking Jake and Gracie I (Julie) have had more positive experiences than negative. A retired couple who walk throughout the Park commented on how well behaved they were and that they never thought they would be standing and talking in the presence of two off-lead Rottweilers.
Gracie is a great ambassador for the breed and has been in the presence of many a nervous individual due to her breed, but has had them in the palm of her paw within minutes due to her gentle nature and cuteness. I am very proud of Gracie in these situations and am very grateful to Pauline Lockyer for allowing me to have one of her much loved Guardami family.
Jake, Gracie and Layla are all good dogs and are a pleasure to walk and be with. Together they have educated many people in the understanding of the Rottweiler and that they are a good breed and should not be persecuted because of a few tragic incidences, which have cast a dark shadow over a very proud and noble creature.

Radio broadcast - BBC Radio 4
On Saturday 18th July, Di McCann was asked to do a small piece about Rottweilers, for the BBC Radio 4 programme "Saturday Live". If you can take the time to have a listen, and give the programme editor some 'feedback' - that would be great! Thanks. Below is the link:
